As the Hofstra University Division of Athletics celebrates the 50th anniversary of the passing of Title IX, we will honor, accept, and tell our University neighborhood about some of the users of the Delight who aided make a difference at Hofstra and paved the way for modern present scholar-athletes, coaches, directors, and groups. Leading up the the June 23 anniversary of the passage of Title IX, Hofstra Athletics will attribute many individuals who played a part in enacting change or people whose encounters at Hofstra ended up improved by the attempts of all those who came before them.

Primary off our series of profiles is Dr. Sylvia J. Giallombardo, just one of Hofstra’s Title IX pioneers. 

Dr. Giallombardo designed the women’s athletics plan and was the first director of women’s athletics at Hofstra, serving in that capacity from 1961 as a result of 1979. As director, she instituted 10 varsity sporting activities for girls and introduced volleyball and women’s lacrosse as athletics in the 1970’s. She made the very first athletic scholarship application for female college student-athletes at Hofstra and was a crucial figure in the advancing Hofstra’s athletics program, equally adult males and women of all ages, throughout her tenure. Giallombardo also coached the women’s basketball team from 1958 as a result of 1974, and served as mentor of the softball, tennis and fencing systems through her tenure as director of women’s athletics.

In 2006, Giallombardo was inducted into the Hofstra Athletics Hall of Fame. In addition, the athletic department’s once-a-year feminine scholar-athlete of the calendar year award is named in her honor. 

In addition to her duties within the athletic section, Giallombardo was element of the Hofstra school. She joined the faculty in 1957 as a physical instruction instructor and has the difference of remaining the longest-serving college member in University heritage, having served 46 yrs in a assortment of capacities. Outdoors of Hofstra, Giallombardo co-started the Very long Island Women’s Lacrosse Association, and held the title of women’s fencing foil winner of Prolonged Island in 1973-74.

Giallombardo is a 1957 graduate of Boston College and gained her master’s degree from Hofstra in 1964. She would receive her PhD from New York University in 1979.
